How do you adjust the altenator belt? I can not get it to pivot freely.

whiel I am not familiar with the maxima al the vg's i've seen use a tensioner and the alternator does not pivot, you have to locate the idler pulley, and loosen the nut in the middle of it, then locate the tensionioner bolt going perpendicualr to the pulley, turn it counterclockwise to loosen, hope this helps

98 Maxima has a VQ, not a VG.

The belt idler pulley has a fine screw adjustment. It has two parts: one screws tight to lock the adjuster itself, and the other screws or unscrews to adjust the belt tension (see the picture below).
