1. how soon do i have to replace CKP sensor?

2. what is the correct part number? I see several of them on ebay.

3. does 98 I30 have one or two CKP sensors? as i read online, replacing one below passenger is enough.

thanks for help.

this video shows replacing CKP sensor in 97 maxima

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJEN0AiLgEM

is that the right thing to replace?

plus i drive about 25 miles per day. i read in some ebay page that this repair should not be delayed too long. is it safe to drive car with this not getting repaired for a week or two?

thanks.

Never had the issue
The computer uses data from the crankshaft pos sensor to run the engine
it is a vital component and if it breaks the engine will just turn over but not start I think
Try to clean it up-it is easy to get to and it is really nasty with oil and grime down by the crank
and make sure it is getting voltage and the resistance of the sensor is within spec first
I only like OEM electronics from Nissan (except for mass airflow sensors)

thanks for your reply.

i thought of taking it to a mechanic. i can locate it, i'll spray some wd40 or brake cleaner to clean around it. maybe that grime went into those terminals/harness.

otherwise car has been starting and running smoothly.

should i look for one at passenger side or one at front? acdelco parts guys have two parts for this with these numbers:

180-0261 ===> youtube video appears to be replacing this part.
180-0319 right

where can i order OEM nissan parts?

thank you

Here is the link for the Crank Position Sensor from the shop manual

http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/Maxima/1998/EC.pdf

Looks like there are 2 of them
Labeled POS and REF
start looking on page 338

Page 341, 342, 346, and 348 help show location and electronic specs to test (voltage and resistance)
Again before changing them out make sure you are getting power to them first

I have the $60 or $70 OBD reader from autozone.

after it shows below codes:

p1335
p1335 pending

then it shows "MIL on" and when I read the codes it shows:

O2 htr
O2 sensor
EGR
catalyst

and 4 others. all are related to engine. should i be worried about others?

I would clear them and see if they come back before worrying about them

did you try the link to the floor shop manual previously posted on this thread?
Try testing the crankshaft position sensors with a multi-meter to see if it is within specs

Your car may have several issues as you noted;
O2 htr
O2 sensor
EGR
catalyst

Try to work each one with the shop manual. If your car has never had O2 sensors or an EGR valve
it probably does since it is high mileage (in my opinion). I think "catalyst" means the catalytic converter issues.

Sometimes just a general cleaning of the throttle body, idle air control valve, and EGR tube will cause some
of the these codes to go away. You should find a lot of information by searching the website about this
type of maintenance which costs very little money.

after i sprayed and cleaned both ckp sensors, the check engine light went away.

however, smog test failed with high NO at 15mph. what could be wrong?

thank you.

except the high NO value at 15mph, every thing else passed. NO, HC, CO2 etc at 25mph are all good.

car runs pretty smoothly.

The EGR valve generally is responsible for NOx cleanup
Sounds like the exhaust gases are not being reburned
Or it might be the catalytic converter
IF the engine was at normal operating temperature the NOx might be lower and you might pass

i had oil change done maybe 2 months ago. when i checked engine oil with dipstick a week ago its close to low mark level. would driving car with that oil level cause engine to run at high temp? car is over 18yrs old. it must be slowly leaking oil through the gaskets. i don't see any oil on my driveway though.

i'll also try techron fuel line cleaner at my next empty tank.

a local mechanic sprayed some seafoam through air intake two days ago. it seems to run bit smoother now.

lot of places say it has to be clogged EGR tube that causes high NOx as the exhaust gas is not being recirculated.

https://axleaddict.com/auto-repair/EGR- ... ep-by-Step

but i didn't find any videos or pictures for cleaning EGR tube specifically for I30. appreciate if you can send any pointers. i didn't even find any websites selling that EGR tube, if i just wanted to replace with new one.

i'll try fuel injector cleaner, refill some oil and try to get the EGR cleaned before i go for retest.
