Hi Everyone

I have a 98 frontier with the KA24DE. Today it started making a rattling noise and when I checked under the hood I noticed the AC pulley on the harmonic balancer is out or square. It wobbles pretty bad. I don't understand how this can be? I thought all the pulleys on the balancer where once chunk of metal. But just the AC one is sidewords. The rattle comes and goes. Any advice?

The balancer isn't a chunk of metal, it couldn't balance anything if that was true. It's a core and a pulley with a rubber laminate in between, that's how it absorbs and dampens power pulses from the crank. Your rubber laminate is shot. There's no fix for that, you need a new balancer.

PS - I wouldn't drive it that way, either. The results of it detaching completely can be very catastrophic.

got it replaced. quick job but pulling the radiator makes a huge mess. PITA.

reason I thought it was on piece of metal was from a cross section I saw on another thread here. looked like all the pulleys were made from the same block of steel. I think the first two are but the AC pulley furthest in is press fit in or something cause it was starting to separate real bad. the grinding noise was the pulley rubbing against the block. made a nasty gash. hope the crank/engine are ok. she runs fine for now.
