ok, so we just got my girlfriend a (new) '98 altima a few weeks back. its in overall decent condition with about 75k on it. however, she would like to find a remote to open her doors since the "dealership" didnt give her one. is there anything particular i should know when looking for one? i know on my max that i had to match up the fcc #'s on the back of the remote to make sure i ordered the right part. my question is that since we didnt get one to start with, how do i go about finding her a replacement?? and does anyone know of any "how-to's" i could use to program it for her??

ok guys, ive got a problem. i just received the remote today and followed the programming instructions but it doesnt work. i even put a new battery in. here are the instructions that came with the remote...

1.Get in & lock the doors2.Insert the key into the ignition 6 times within 15 seconds3.Hazard lights should flash4.Put key back into the ignition & turn to Accessory5.Press the master door lock (on drivers door arm rest) unlock/lock6.Hit the lock button on the remote7.Hazards should flash8.Pull key out and open the drivers door and then close it 9.It should be set

i went through to step 2 but the hazards never flashed. i tried several times to no avail, and even went all the way through just to see if it would work at any point, which it didnt. now then, the car was bought from a used lot and didnt have a "nissan" key, just a home depot knock-off replica key. could that be the problem? i was thinking that maybe since she didnt have a nissan key, there would be no chip to send a signal to the computer. is this correct at all, or do i just need different instructions? i called the dealership and gave the car's VIN for them to look up the part number of the remote. having done that, i asked them to read off the FCC# and i matched that up with the remote i bought. does anyone have any ideas? please help!

I'm going to guess and say that you need some different instructions. That year nissan shouldn't have a transponder chip in the key. If you needed a chip your knock off key wouldn't work, nor would the cheap extras I made for mine. I'm curious now about how to program them. In case I ever have some trouble.

ok, the directions i have worked...just not for me. my friend at the dealership got in and did the same thing and got it programmed w/no trouble. guess it just needed "the touch," oh well.

nope, he just kept inserting/removing the key until the hazards flashed...first time it didnt want to work, then he just kept doing it (probably about 12-15 times worth) until it finally took it.
