I need opinions on what caused a new rear rotor to warp.

4 weeks ago I had a shop replace the rear disc brakes and rotors. I only drive this vehicle 20 miles per day, 18 miles of it is on local streets to get to work and back. After 350 miles I noticed a thumping at lower speeds from the rear which seemed to be getting louder every day. I spun the wheel and felt some resistance, then removed it. I noticed the rotor was wobbly when spun and the thumping noise was caused by the rotor hitting the brake pads. The rotor also felt like it wasn’t flush against its base and seemed a little off color for a new rotor.

I replaced the rotor and turned the caliper piston in 3 full turns. I have driven the car 70 miles including 10 miles at highway speeds and everything seems good. I think the shop didn’t turn the caliper piston in enough and the pads were rubbing against the rotor from the get-go which caused it to warp. The shop says I am wrong and was driving with the parking brake on.Note:I never use the parking brake. Any ideas would be appreciated

It sounds more like they didnt clean the hub and properly index the rotor when they installed it. Your theroy of what they did is not likely or possible. In order to get the caliper back on you need to collapse it enough to get it over the rotor. once you achive that it wont rub as it sits right up against the rotor as soon as the pedal is depressed. The discoloration indicates a high heat situation. This does indicate heavy and /or frequent brake applications but in this case all rotors would be discolored. Couple things to check: Are the cliper slide pins properly lubed and have free movement in the bores? Is you ebrake properly set[not to tight]? another possibility could be a hanging caliper piston.
