First off I want to apologize for any typos I may or may not have in this. My wireless keyboard is going out and every now and then it'll miss keystrokes.
Okay onto the problem and the car itself. We have a 1998 Altima KA/auto with 122,000 miles. We've had it since 72,000 miles and it's been a great car with no real problems so far. Last year sometime it started acting up though, when my wife would stop at a light and go to take off it would hesitate, jerk, buck, etc. It threw a code for the MAF so I replaced it and all was well.
After a month or two it started acting up in a similar way but under different conditions, before it seemed to only act up when the throttle was first applied. But now this is what it does, (Edit: so far it hasn't done it while idling) it doesn't matter if you are part throttle or WOT, doesn't matter if you're doing 20mph or 70mph, doesn't matter if it's low on fuel or full tank. What happens is you're driving along minding your own business and then its almost like the engine has shut off completely for a second or two, there's no sputtering, no heads up to it happening, all is fine then the car violently jerks (like you've hit the brakes) and then a split second later its fine again. Its hard to describe but its like someone flipped a switch. I figured if it was the fuel pump it would slowly die and slowly come back to life but this is instantaneous. I would suspect MAF again but if that were the case wouldn't it backfire, pop, sputter or something like that? Whatever it is affects all the cylinders at the same time, could a bad cap/rotor do this?
The car is bone stock and we've done nothing but basic maintenance on it. I would suspect ignition cylinder except all the other gauges are fine when this happen. I'm leaning more towards cap/rotor, MAF, something like that. It doesn't happen constantly, it's rare and random, sometimes it goes a week without doing it, sometimes its a couple times a day but it never lasts longer than a second or two and has not made the car stall yet. I've looked for loose connections and all seems fine, no corrosion either.
