Im finding it exceedingly difficult to find a nice, unmolested, low milage kouki. Too many people not selling or too many ricers thinking they're JDM dRiFt TyTe, rolling the cars into walls.

Are these cars low production? I only care for red, black or white, which seems to make it even harder. Even more so when looking for one with a standard.

:(

Yup. I ended up settling for a zenki and I have grown to love the zenki even more than the kouki. I was specifically looking for a 5spd kouki too.

good luck!

they only made about 2000 in the last year, not much more in 97...I would say production in 93 probably was more than 95-98 combined. I am trying to find numbers on these myself for my slowly becoming definitive website :)

Back in July of '98 when I purchased mine, it was brand new but I had to wait 3 months for it!!! It was supposedly the last 1998 240sx 5pd in Pearl White to enter the US. Don't know if that was true or not, but it was quite a wait. The Nissan dealership couldn't even find out what options it had on it. All they knew was that it was white and a 5 spd. So they sold it to me at the base price. I ended up with a SE w/all the goodies minus leather (Didn't want it anyways) so it was a big loss for them!!! So hopefully that gives you an idea of how many of these are left in good condition............ Good Luck!!! :)

The sales dropped dramatically after the S14 hit the market... (they put out the exact numbers an article in a magazine a while back about it...)

The 1995 base was more in cost than anything previously except the limited convertible....the SE was close to the limited in price.

They simply priced it out of it's demographic. They were hoping to capture the up and coming young woman professional market which they did slightly, but they shot themselves in the foot alienating their typical customer.

They were going to even make in front wheel drive in 1995, but retooling was to costly.

I am glad they at least kept it RWD...and to me I rather have a different car even if it means extended time searching for a nice one.

How much would you consider paying for mine?

http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/524758

If I sell it, it would have to be a good deal for me. It has 91K on it. I bought it with 54K on it from a 55 year old 100lb woman who did all the recommended services through the dealer. I would say 80% of the miles I put on are highway. Definately not an abused car. All I have put on is a Injen intake and wires. I don't want to sell it, but if the right offer came along I would.

Daniel, there was a red SE 5-speed 97 model for sale off of what looked like Protech's dyno shop. It was for sale for some time... might still be up for grabs.

A while back there was a white SE 98 for sale in the paper too. Not sure if it was a 5-speed or not, but I'm sure you have aspirations to swap the engine.

It's going to be next to impossible to find any kind of decent condition 97 or 98 regardless of mileage for $6k.

You may get lucky, but you'll need to find it outside a classified ad probably...all it takes is one look at other 240SX prices for someone to see they may even be able to get more money now than what they paid for there's.

This is why you see all the 97/98 guys listing there cars in the papers/internet at 12000-15000, but are really hoping some kind of bidding war pushs them to 15000-20000 (which won't happen).

I talked to two guys that had cars on autotrader in the 12k range, niether were really selling...one told me he'd need at least $18,000 to sell (his ad said 12,000 with 36k or something).

It's ads like that that artificially inflate the rest.

yea its depressing. Its not a Supra or RX7, its a 240sx. No one took care of these cars cause they were nothing special when they came out. Its even funnier when people try to mark up their busted cars cause they think its something special because its low production.

I do find lots of realistically priced ones, but they are all automatics.

The 97 and 98 240SX SE especially were not cheap cars. At that price point most wanted the auto....at the time it was targeted to women who usually prefer the automatic as well.

If you really want a reasonably priced 95-98 240SX you have two choices. The 95-96 models and do a conversion on the front end, and rear if you want....or an auto boxed 97-98 and go to manual.

I am probably going to go the auto to manual route. I can do the work myself and chances are I'd want to R&R the clutch anyway. On top of that most of the autos had 'nicer' lives ;)

If your really looking for a clean 97/98 240sx, i suggest a automatic SE or LE. My freind has an auto 98 SE and it is the cleanest S14 i have ever seen in my life, even with 57,000 miles on it.

6K? Do not buy a 97/98 at that price without a good going over. I'm not saying that my car is worth the prices that some are selling for, but why not take advantage of the opprotunity? Cars and appreciation rarely go together. The best offer I have received is 10K.

i think i might just go the Auto route. Itd be the cheapest way. I was thinking about doing an RB26 swap a while back, but im not sure if i should do that any more. Im trying to get a 240 to lower my car payments not to have another hole in the ground to pour money in to. :(

I bought my 97' 5spd base for $4,800 only because the lady didn't know what she had :-) And I searched autotrader everyday for about 7 months

Thats really sad how bad the sales dropped off. Hopefully with Nissan redesigning alll of their cars and the reintroduction of the Z car. There seems to be a crazy for sport cars again. The new Miatia, Mazda 3, Pontiac Soltice, 4G eclipse, Toyota MR2. Maybe with my fingers crossed they'll bring back some kind of form of the 240. I figure it would have 200 plus HP bc the Z has 287hp.The only reason they never brought over the sr20det is bc u could have the same proformance of a Z car for half the price. I heard somewhere they are stoppping production on the sr20det bc of emission restrictions. Its always been a dream of mine. (a wet dream) lol

I wounldnt call the mazda 3 or 4g eclipse sport cars, more like sportish looking compacts. But yes this does seem like a trend, and i like it!!!

the SR20 is still in production and is an active test platform in the nissan labs :)

Thanks

Hm..this is discouraging. I'm hoping to get a Kouki 5 sp. SE at the beginning of summer in black. I don't know if I'm gonna do a swap so I really need the 5 speed. I like the looks of the kouki a LOT more than the zenki and I really want a black one too. Damn 240 trend kinda sucks, I wish fewer people liked these cars. Stupid drifters :) Honestly though, is there a chance that I'll be able to find at least a 97 or 98 black 5 speed?

Your chances are incredibly bad. Take what you can get.

There are 97/98 beater automatics with salvage titles in the $5-7k range...

Laying $10k on the table is what it's going to realistically take right now for a low mileage 5 spd...thank D1 and F&F series. ;)

Honestly, D1 and F&F have nothing to do with it in my opinion. It was all the magazines that started runing 240sx features.

I've seen 97/98 SE 5 speeds on autotrader for a little less than $10k recently...It doesn't seem quite so bad as alkemyst claims, although i'll admit that they arent abundant

Last 5 speed I saw was listed for $12,000, I guess it depends where you live too.

You can find an SE 5spd for less than $10k easily....less than $6-7K probably not. For $10k I am looking for low mileage and mint condition/maintenance records.

I don't want to get a $7k car and have to do $4-5k in catch maintenance (broken/scratched up interior items, beat down engine/trans items, and over worn suspension bits.).

even at 1,000 units no car is impossible to find usually once it's past 10 years and less than 20 years old. Once you are talking *new* or very old then rarity is measured in 1,000's.
