How can I identify if someone is discussing a 98 240 SX. I never know if they are talking about a 92, or 94, or 98, or even a 1990. Give me the secret knowledge.

I'm in graphic design, and I read everything I get my hands on, but I don't know jack about how to actually do the serious stuff. (replacing gaskets, or real seals, timing chains, etc). Like Jim Rome said "when it comes to car engines, I'm kind of a "knucklehead". Way too busy at work, teenage alien daughter, etc - you guys know the drill.

Well lets see here...

S13 = 89-94 240sx (identifiable by it's popup headlights)

S14 = 95-98 240sx (no popup headlights)

KA24E = SOHC (single overhead cam) engine found in 89-90 240's (aka: E, KAE, sohc)

KA24DE = DOHC (dual overhead cam) engine found in 91-98 240's (aka: DE, KADE, dohc)

KA = Used to refer to both of the above engines.

SR20DE = Very popularly swapped in to 240's of any make, usually with a turbo (thus- SR20DET) (aka: SR, SR20)

Adding "T" to any of the above declares it a turboed engine, though the sr20 is the only one which may have a turbo from the factory (ka24det, sr20det, kat, etc.)

I probably left something out or goofed something up, so don't take this post as final until someone has had time to correct it.

NO You pretty much nailed it man. One more thing though in Japan the95,96 240s are referred to as Zenki, and the 97,98 are called Kouki so if you ever hear this they are referring to the changes in headlights and tailights, anyway you know what I mean.

You would figure that all SE S14's would come with VLSD but alas they don't, Auto, Manual, ABS or not some just don't have them, like mine! 95 SE S#*%!

Also, Zenki can refer to 89-90 and Kouki refer to the 91-94 if you add an S13 in there.

LSD and ABS were a package option, so if you have ABS, you should definitly have a VLSD with it regardless of automatic or manual transmission

All Canadian S14's had VLSD. And, there are some S14's w/ ABS but no VLSD. There is no way to really know for sure without taking a look at the diff, if it has an orange sticker on it, it's VLSD.
