Hi all,

I could use some advice. My everyday driver has 107000 miles on it and never a moments worry. However recently my clutch started to slip. Which is how I found this forum while looking for a repalcement. In the last 36hrs. I've have tried to absorb the wealth of info here but need to shorten the process drastically. So here are a couple of questions:

1) Whats a good clutch for street and some track?

2) Are there to many miles on my engine to turbo it? or should I just buy a FWD front clip and do complete engine swap? (Bluebird)

I may not be asking the correct questions so please guide me in the direction.

Thanks.

Welcome aboard!

For NA power the stock clutch new is fine. No need to go overboard unless you plan on turbo in the near future. The exedy clutch is a good choice. If you want something to hold some power, Clutchnet has several different stages available. From 200hp-500hp, all depending on your needs. A sr20 with 100k on the clock is a good candidate for a turbo, as long as the motor was properly taken care of, oil changes, etc.. You don't need a complete clip, just get a Bluebird motor, Avenir motor or GTiR motor, whatever floats your boat. Read the FAQ on turbos, has some info on the motors I listed.

Thanks for the info; after further reading I think I will go the turbo kit route. Though I know I have taken really good care of my engine is there means to test my engine compression and/or other ways to confirm that fact. I found a shop that will bring it from stock to 400Hp for about $4000. Sounds like a pretty decent deal to me.

In your opinion RED will this still be usable as an everyday driver and with that much power will the limited slip even work with that much horse power.

It depends on the rest of your setup as to whether it will be usable.

Your clutch will need to be pretty heavy duty to manage all that, and that means more legwork.

You'll need GREAT tires to consistently put all that power to the ground from a FWD car.

Moreover, 400hp will require some internal work of the engine (lower compression pistons, for instance) to retain much reliability.

Some mechanics have the equipment to do a compression test.

Honestly, 400hp is going to be stinkin fast, you may want to consider doing a 250-300hp setup (GTi-R parts with a T28, bigger injectors, and a reprogrammed ECU will do this all day long) first and seeing how you like it, then moving up if your boost fetish isn't satiated.

Welcome to NICO!

400hp is useless on the street, especially if you decide to drive a few days a week. Plus the tranny is the weak link. You can turbo our current motor for arond 2k. Output of around 220-250whp and be very reliable. Option 2, just buy a sr20det and swap out the old de. sr20det have lower compression pistons, piston oil squirters and they are already turbo charged. I suggest a blue bird or avenir motor. GTiR is too complicated, throw a T28 on the two motors I suggested and you basically have a GTiR motor. Read over the FAQ for turbo. Lot of information.

I saw this kit for $799. Based on what I've read here in these forums for the kind power while maintaining my everyday driver this is a very basic starting point. Tell me what you think everyone. Any constructive feed back is greatly appreciated.

Thats a good price for the kit. But you also will need your ecu reprogrammed to compensate for the bigger injectors that you are going to have to buy, along with a different MAF.

Wow, that looks really clean. A T03/04 setup is a wee bit big for my tastes, but man... $799? That's awesome, where'd you find that?

Actually alot of SE-R folks are going with the T03/T04 setups. Just keep the A/R reasonable and it will make damn good power around 4krpms. Hell my T28 doesnt reach full boost until 3800rpm.

But I'm like you, not a fan of big turbos either. My car makes between 260-280whp and if I want a little more, throw in some cams and good for another 30whp. It's already crazy fast and 30 more would be ridiculous.

Give me 250whp on demand over 350hp at 5000 rpm any day.

I'm reconsidering my setup as well, because I know I'd get boost hungry, I hate not using parts to their full potential, but that's a money pit, plus cams (S3R) and a header are a good $4-500 cheaper to start with, and that gets me pulleys, flywheel, or brakes or some combination thereof or a number of other things for that matter, and I can still get very near my 200whp goal.
