Reliability and max hp don't mix too well.
That said, a good-condition Bluebird or Avenir motor with a GTi-R T28 or a "disco potato" and upgraded manifold is going to be your best bet. Add a good FMIC setup, boost controller, exhaust, and solid tuning and you'll be in the 250-300whp range reliably, which is all you'd ever want in a car you drive every day. FWD cars aren't much fun when they have too much power to turn (or go straight, for that matter).
