97nissan maxima passaged door won't lock

My Passenger door won't lock on my 97 Nissan Maxima. I try to lock it manually, with the remote, and with the lock button on the driver side and it still won't lock. It makes the sound as if it were locked but you can still open it from both the inside and the outside handles. help!
