Here's a great site with tons of info:
http://www.terra2imports.ca/

On the left side of the home page is a JDM Importing Guide:
The Beginners Guide to Importing from Japan. A must-read before importing JDM.

This is the direct link:
http://www.terra2imports.ca/download/im ... Canada.pdf

I realize it's for Canada, but it's still a great guide.

They also have a section of cars that are eligible for US importation :

Browse our USA-legal (25 year +) JDM Imports
http://www.terra2imports.ca/ab-listings ... +DESC&p=25

There's a lot of info and support on that site. Hope that helps get you started.

I think you going to find it is too much $$$ and effort to get that car here. Plus the insurance will always be more $$$. I would seriously look at what the car would fetch to sell in Japan versus what you can use to buy something here.

if you really want to buy it, I would find one of these importers and get help. Plus you need to decide if this car is worth making into a left-hand drive, a right hand drive looks cool but having a rigth-hand daily driver I don't think so.

Here's the deal. I bought my Cedric for about $1400.00 this car was in mint condition, already airbagged, sporting 19's on low-pro's, low bass exhaust , Aimgain Euro Aero kit full kit, Alpine Head unit, MB Quarts 6.5's in all the doors, 2 Kicker L7 12 in the trunk, extremely dark tints, On dash navigation, curtains, custom wooden steering wheel the works.... the reason the guy had to sell it so cheap was because he was having kids and wanted to get into the VIP van thing they got going on here. and JN dealerships sell modified cars alot cheaper than stock. All i have to do to this car is keep cleaning it. This thing is Pimped out. and im loving it. Man i'd hate to let this ride go. Looking into it, it'd cost about 18 grand to bring it back.... I'll probably sell it here and but a Q45 / Cima when i get back.. Dammit......

How did you come up with a figure of $18,000?
