97 s14 automatic trans problem

whenever the car is started cold it has to be driven in 1st or 2nd for a minute or two before it will work in Drive. If it is put in drive right away it just never engages, but after a few minutes in 1st or 2nd it can be put into drive and it will work fine for the rest of the day as long as it doesn't cool off all the way (like an overnighter). Its like it has to warm up first... Any suggestions?

have you tried to change the filter on the trans?

no not yet, considering just doing the manual swap

possibly a sticky solenoid somewhere on the trans?

if you think you can tackle the auto to manual swap, go for it. manuals are too much fun
