Hi everyone,

I hope this is not a repeat post.

Today i decided to seafoam my 97 QX4 3.3, well the seafoam through brake booster worked as described in the many posts about correctly seafoaming your engine.

BUT, when i put 1/3 of it in the crankcase and drove it for 8-10 mins, the engine started knocking very loudly.

I can hear it from my drivers seat.

Now, i know many people have used it to get rid of knocking, why am I getting the opposite result.

I have also changed my oil with 10w 40 since it happened.

Is this a minor issue or is my engine gone?

Thanks for any help.

Well, after letting the car sit for like an hour, the noise is gone.

I think i just rushed into blaming seafoam.

I'm not sure what the length of time you're supposed to let seafoam sit in the crankcase is....But I wouldn't recommend it..something about putting a product that has the corrosive qualities such as that in my OIL doesn't set well with me. I run it through the intake and that's it. I wouldn't bother putting it through the fuel...injector cleaner is a whole lot cheaper and does the same thing. But the knocking you were hearing is probably the seafoam breaking down the oil and robbing it of the lubricating properties...and you were hearing metal-on-metal wear...at least I would assume so, like I said, I've never done it.

I think you are right Sixguns, now when the engine is warm, i hear the knocking again.

I have already changed my oil and the new oil is free from Seafoam. (At least i think i got all of it out when i changed my oil and filter)

I am going to drive it a bit more to see what happens.

Thanks for the advice.

Umm, not to worry you but I did the same thing with my Pathy 3.3l and the knocking was a spun bearing, which by the way, I didn't know at the time cause I was not as intelligent as I am now.

The end result of all this, a rod through the cast iron block.

If the noise continues and you have the tools, check your crank bearings.

Ummm, most people dont just "have the tools" to pull aprat there motor from under the oil pan

If the knocking is rpm dependant (goes quicker when you raise the rpm) its defientely in the motor. Not necessarily a spun bearing on the crank, but thats the most common....

And if you did spin a bearing, its only going to get worse

Ive spun a bearing though, and you KNOW something is wrong, cause the knocking is LOUD, like very loud

I'm just sayin. That's what happened to me.

If that is the case though, shouldn't we notify Seafoam??

if car has over 100000 miles use 20-50 exxon superflo with a quart of Lucas oil stabilizer.
