It's no longer a single manual after 96, two big thick books, the 2002 is 3 big thick books........see why CD rom now....just massive amount of testing proceedures with newer cars.
The dealer service computer uses symptoms to zero in on the problem....you do x,y,z test then it narrows the problems down more test more test.............current vehicles are way too complicated to train techs in a single week long school like was done in 1989.........the 94 changes took two weeks to cover and 1996 OBD2 added another week........they had to go to interactive diagnostics or the techs would constantly be in school and get no work done........
Every post 1995 vehicle owner should have their own OBD2 scanner and at least a list of the few hundred common codes. To determine the criticality [immediately to the dealer or can it wait a week]
Old ODBi had 17 + 10 codes for engine and transmission currently there are over 300 to chose from soon over 2,000 individual levels will be checked..........very very bad, very bad, functional but out of spec, normal, extra good, and way too good something is definitely wrong and about to explode will each have a subcode display.
