Is it possible to replace the strut cartridges in the strut assembly for a '97 Q45? If so, where can I get them economically? I'm experiencing some harsh "clunking" over even small bumps. Is this a sign for new strut cartridges or some other problem with mounts, etc...? I just replaced the lower arms with ball joints but that hasn't brought back the formerly smooth ride. Any suggestions would be much appreciated

Tension rod, steering rack, and anti sway bar and link bushings are all suspect. Also, strut bearings whould be replaced along with all rubber. Spring seats may also be required. If you are keeping the car for awhile, have all on hand as you will need them eventually.

Yes you can replace just the cartridges. No you cannot do so economically. They are pretty much a dealer item (excluding KYBs which are even more expensive.
