I just replaced my old electic garage door opener with a new one. These days, the remotes have the rolling code feature for safety.

My 97 Q45's integrated homelink transmitter worked fine with the previous (20 yr old) garage door opening system.

But I am not able to program the transmitter with the new remote. The procedure on the owner's manual is simple:1. Clear previous settings by pressing the button#1 and #3 simultaneously for 20 secs or so, until the light flashes rapidly.2. Press the button on the integrated transmitter and check that the red light is flashing slowly. Then press the new remote's button and keep both pressed until the Q45's remote light flashes rapidly. This can take from 10 sec to 90 sec.

But in this case, the Q45's remote light doesn't flash rapidly. I chose all the 3 buttons one after the other and no effect.

Is there something to do with rolling codes safety feature? I know that this feature has been there for some time so most built-in remotes in the cars should already be working. What am I missing? Someone must have faced the same problem that I have now.

Please help.thanks a lotPNSan Jose, CA97 Q45, 97K miles. Very happy owner, thanks to the club.

I might have got the answer to this. But I have another question. I found from the garage door opener's website that since dec 1996, homelink transmitters on the cars got updated to provide support for rolling codes technologies. The older integrated transmitters didn't have the support and wouldn't work with openers with the intellicode technology.

Hhhmm!! So my car's integrated remote is useless now!! How do I get the new homelink transmitter for the car? Is there a part#?

Appreciate any help.thanks a lotPN

This is what I learnt....

In December of 1996, HomeLink had a transition process to a rolling code (Intellicode) compatible offering. The transition was scheduled to run through the 1997 model year, although most current production is rolling code compatible.

The initial versions were not compatible with rolling code radio systems and utilized a RED indicator light. The upgraded rolling code compatible systems utilizes an AMBER indicator light or a triangular RED indicator light within the HomeLink icon. The same training procedure is used on rolling code compatible systems as previous versions with an additional step. Once the original transmitter has trained the HomeLink transmitter, the receiver must be trained to accept the HomeLink transmitter. The process would be the same as adding a transmitter to the receiver.

Final answer:

Called dealership, They didn't have a clue (small problem for them, right?). Called infiniti and they forwarded the call to HomeLink company. From July 1997, they started making rolling code understandable transmitters and it just depends when the car companies put the their new remotes on the cars.

How to fix the old remotes on the cars:First of all, they are useless for rolling code technology remotes. Upgrade the car to have the new remote types. Or, downgrade the garage door opener system to work with non-rolling code transmitters.

Choice 1:Visit junk yards to find a compatible tech. (and size) remote with the new technology and replace the old one with this one.

Choice 2:Buy a universal non-rolling code type homelink receiver unit, install it to the new garage door opener. The car's old remote will then work.

Hope this helps. Good luck.thanks.

Not sure if this will help. Johnson Controls is the owner of the Homelink system. Maybe with that you can find the info you need.
