Hey Gang,Curious to know if there is any other 97+ Q owners out there with an interest in a cold air intake system? Im in the process of putting a prototype together on my 97. Ill be headed to the dyno to do some testing as soon as possible. No pics availible yet...very soon though...im waiting on a 3.5" to 3" reducing coupling to get the prototype on my car.

Terry

PS...considering protoing a mandrel bent catback as well.would be substantially cheaper than Stillens

90-96 is a TOTALLY different car than the 97-01. Enough such that very few parts will ever be interchangeable.

We have sufficient aftermarket support - the 97-01 owners are very underserved...

OK gang its installed...Im having issues with getting digital pics...ill see about getting them this weekend...sorry.I got all the couplings and it fits great! Im working on getting prices for a CNC machined MAF adapter and a quote from a production shop on making the piping pieces. Its currently on the car...Butt dyno says its doing something but we all know how acurate butt dynos can be:). Tenative dyno date is may 10th. Ill post pics ASAP.

Terry - Did you get my email about the Phoenix meet?

Any chance I could get a closer look at that intake proto?

Thanks Terry. I have been working on trying to modify mine as well. I have read many threads about this issue, so I will be happy to see your results. I tired by drilling out the sheet metal below the POP Charger filter (where the old bos used to be), but I personally don't have a way to measure the temps. I use my Gtech computer to read me my HP and 0-60, 0-100, 1/4 mile times to see if they have made a difference, but it's tough to tell. My biggest worry is that when you add the new filter, it bypasses a mass ariflow sensor that resides at the old intake. As you know, the one behind the filter remains intact, but I have a feeling that the other disconnected one ends up reducing MPG, which probably also means power/efficicency. I am not sure because no one has been able to give me a good answer about this. Without a doubt, the Q engine compartment gets hotter than heck, especially in the summer. So, the hot air is bound to kill HP.

yeah the POP charger would definetly let more heat in than the stock air box...there is a ton of open space where the filter sits now...as for fuel economy i watch that like a hawk:). I consistanly get 20mpg and have since ive gotten the car tuned up a few monthes back. My latest fill up with the CAI was at 21mpg...I only had the CAI in for 1/2 tank too...So its not losing economy anyhow. I have plans in the very near future to go to the dyno and run it with the stock box and then with the CAI in place...it will be interesting to see. Also i may see if i can borrow my friends consult to test the MAF voltage to see if thats been affected at all.

Thanks Tgvince for your innovative work. I notice that you went to a meet in Phoenix and your car was viewable there. I am unaware of the meet schedules but is there ever anything similar in California? Any ideas? With regards to your cold air piping, what type of shop did the work, or did you do some of it yourself? I ask this because I am trying to get ideas about what type of shops I should approach to see if they are game on trying this type of modification for me. I can see that there's plenty of empty fender/bumper space under the metal where the old airbox used to be, so a 3inch hole drilled through it plus plumbing might not be too strange a request. One last note. I have a very heavy foot and my gas mileage has never been higher than 18mpg. I average 14 to 16 in the city. My car is tuned, EPROMED, custom dual exhaust, etc., but I can't imagine being able to get 20+mpg. How do you do it? Thanks.

Im sure there are lots of car meets in CA...I have gone over to at least three for the SE-R group...I know there have been some all Nissan meets as well...Whether there close to you im not sure. I actually made the entire intake setup, I have a welder and a bit of fabrication experience. Ive built three pretty unique SE-R turbo cars including my own. The plan is for me to test this intake on the Dyno to see if it does anything as far as HP improvement...if not I will add some length and try again. If it frees up at least 5 hp then I will take it to a production shop Ive worked with in the past to have them make up a jig so they can whip these suckers out:). So if all goes as planned I will offer these as a complete kit...but as it stands I need Dyno proof in hand as im not selling something that does nothing.I do mostly highway driving...not a lot of stop and go so that probably helps...you say you have your car EPROMED? I haven’t really dug into it but I didn’t think there was anyone who did 97+ ECU work? As for your exhaust, Ive heard from a very reliable source that the Infiniti Exhausts can be exceptionally free flowing...perhaps your aftermarket one isn’t as good? Please don’t take offense...as I am just throwing stuff out there. Probably the biggest contributor to your gas mileage is that heavy foot:)...maybe you should get lighter shoes...LOL.

Tgvince, what year turbo SE-R do you have? I also own a SE-R except im an all motor freak, I think every Q owner should own a first gen SE-R, its the perfect backup for the Q, my buddy who owns Performance center in Ehartford CT just put down 379 hp and 350 tourque at 20 psi, the onbly problem is that his JW ECU did not have the rev liniter removed so the car was shutting down at 7200.

I have a 92 SE-R, Im the original owner. I have the DET turbo goodies (T25), FMIC, 3" custom exhaust, Swaintech white lightining on all the hot parts, FTF fuel rail (thats me:), 36# injectors, JWT 370cc turbo program, S3 exhaust cam, GC coilovers, and brandy new Falken Azenis tires which are amazing street tires:). I was at the dyno about a month ago it put down 220whp on 9psi. A friend of mine G20 that we built with a GTiR turbo goodies and pretty much the same stuff as my car but with the 50# inj and cobra MAF. he put down 300whp on that setup at 18psi....Which was the goal. As for the rev limiter being at 7200 on a JWT ECU it should be at 7800 minimum....If your looking at the stock tach for that info they have been known to be off 500rpm up top. Also on most SE-R turbos you dont need to go much higher than 7500 as they fall on there face...of course that depends on the manifold hes running.

Nice gains, we read the rpms from the MDM, it showed exactly 7200, he has flowed some reall good numbers on the flow bench for his head work, but im not sure wich manifold he is using, I do know he is running 550cc injectors with the cobra maf, im on my second SE-R, my first one I had for 7 years, that car all motor put down 168 hp, not too bad for a lil 2.0, once again great gains on the intake.:)
