I've got a 97 Q I picked up. previous owner said trans was toast and would not move.

I got a battery for it, wouldn't start, needed fuel. so new fuel pump and it fired right up.

out of curiosity I put it into drive, magical the car drove forward. I was surprised. I got back to the house and put it into R and it went backwards. Put it back into P and then back into D. Now car won't go forward, only goes in reverse.

so it's a lot more hopeful than thinking the car wouldnt move at all.

so yeah, is there a self diagnostic or do I need to pick a consult to see if there are codes?

I remember reading notes on something like that happening, if I remember correctly, it said to check the inhibitor switch...could be a place to start this hunt.

Yeah the car is parked over at my old mans house since im outta space over here. So every other week ill go mess with it a little bit. Its about on the furthest back burner possible.

I was going through the gears yesterday and it actually does feel like its trying to do something in D but it wont move unfortunately

The transmission self-diagnosis starts on page AT-23 of the FSM.

It looks easier to launch a rocket than to follow the steps listed in the FSM. Good luck.

Thanks man and yeah these self diagnostics shiz always tough lol. really need to get a scanner one of these days. I never work on OBD2 cars but lately its become an issue.

May wind up giving up on this AT like I did with the G50 and just do a 5 speed swap
