Ok, so, I got a great deal on a 97 pathy today...at least I hope it was..4x4, 212k - $400.

We just did a tuneup - plugs, cap, roter, wires. She still stutters and then dies...is this the distributer having issues?

thx!

That sounds like a pretty good deal! Even if you have to do a few repairs, a driver for 400.00 that goes in the snow is good!

It could be the distributor - those distibutors are the cause of the problem pretty often on those years, but I would put a new fuel filter and check fuel pressure on it before I went and got a new distributor. If it has not run for a long time old gas could be part of the problem.

Factory service manuals for your truck are here:

Also, check out the general information sticky thread up above - it has a lot of info in it.

It is in the back, underneath the truck up above the area where the differential is.

That was pretty easy then!

Techron is a pretty good fuel system cleaner - maybe run a bottle or two thru it to get everything cleaned up and running smoothly.

She is sputtering when excelerating (not always tho). I put in a bottle of Lucas Fuel Cleaner and filled the tank. Hopefully, this will help. I know it will sputter when the fuel has been messed up...

Try and get it out on the highway. Drive at highway speeds for a good 10 minutes and make sure everything sounds ok. Kind of a short road test.

When you turn the ignition key to "on", make sure your check engine light turns on so you know it works. That way, if the engine is setting any codes, the light will turn on.

Your owners manual can be downloaded here if you need it: https://www.infiniti-techinfo.com/depto ... dept_id=55

check engine light is on....codes are for the knock sensor AND the MASS! I am wondering if a dirty MASS can cause this as well? It seems to only stutter after 2rpm. and only about 60% of the time. I just let go of the pedal and then press down again. ggrrr. I'll have to deal with this in Reno...hope I can find a decent mechanic there. Thankfully I am only going roughly 210 miles.

You did pretty good - bought a truck for 400.00 and got it running in a few days for a move to Reno which was only about a week away!

The knock sensor is kind of tough to replace, but the Mass air flow sensor you can do your self. When you get time, go to Ebay and search for "1997 Pathfinder MAF sensor". They are not too pricey.

I figure you are getting ready to move, so you don't have time to do much of anything right now. Have a good trip and post back when you get to Reno and let us know how the trip went.

Oh yeah, just to be clear, yes it could be the problem. I'm not 100% sure it is, but it will need to be fixed - so the best place to start.
