97 Pathfinder Headlights not shutting off

I have a 97 Pathfinder (automatic). Once in a while the headlights will stay on after the ignition is switched off and key is removed. There does not seem to be any pattern for when this happens. The only way I have been able to get them off is disconnecting the battery and leaving it disconnected for at least 15-20 min. If I reconnect it right away the problem persists.

I should mention the vehicle has an remote starter system installed (was on the truck when i bought it) but aside from that everything is standard equipement.

Any suggestions before I take it to have someone spend alot of money chasing something that I will never be able to repeat when i get it to the mechanic?

i would have to think its related to the install on the remote start, but the fact that it doesnt do it all the time is a bit fishy. I will look at the FSM tomorrow, and let you know what i come up with...
