So I have a 97 Pathfinder SE 4x4 with the 3.3L engine. Had several issues, starting with the EVAP system being full of charcoal particles. Fixed it with compressed air and a new charcoal box and cleaning the valves (several times). Then the vehicle would randomly die. pulled codes, they all pointed to the MAF sensor. Cleaned it, didnt work, ordered a re-manufactured one from Rock Auto and it fixed that part. .......... Now, it also randomly dies again and loses all power making braking at intersections "Thrilling". Checked codes, pointed to the camshaft sensor (which is built into the distributor). Got a "new" one at Napa, replaced today, AND.... didnt start. Crank but no start. Took the cap off, cranked it a little, put it back on, STARTED. AWESOME...... ran like garbage. Sputtered, stalled, surging, would die when slowly accelerating in neutral. Took the cap off, the tip of the rotor looks used and has burn/scorch marks. Youtube search said this was result of a used rotor. WTF... did Napa sell me a used distributor marked as new for 300 DOLLARS?!?!?

Mission tomorrow: Pull "new" distributor out :bang , put old tempermental one back in  , drive to Napa :rotfl , replace for a new one, making sure the rotor dosent look burnt :argh , and try again.

OH AND AS EXTRA FUN, The connector for the camshaft position sensor that comes up from the engine wiring harness and connects to the distributor's own connector, has partially disintegrated... cant find it online. pleeeasse help hahaha

I had the same symptoms and same code, replacing the distributor fixed it.

My connector kinda fell apart as well but still works.... just be careful with it . I plugged it back in with the plastic all broken but has bee fine for at least 5 years since

Yup. It was the distributor becasue the cam sensor is inside it. Changed the distributor, but it was used/broken. So i went back to Napa and they marked it as defective and gave me another one where the tip of the rotor looked clean and new. Works perfectly now. No more check engine light and it starts up well.
