My 97 Pathfinder goes in and out of overdrive. It doesn't seem to make any difference whether I'm going 55 mph or 70 mph. The overdrive on/off button does not seem to have an effect either. It doesn't do it constantly(hunting) and I can't tie it's occurence to any particular driving situation or condition. The dealer says it's likely(best guess) the tcm that's at fault but they could not guarantee their prognosis because it doesn't throw any fault codes that is after leaving it with them for 3 days. I have already replaced the tcm once but with the same results. I'm inclined to believe that suspect is mechanical like a stuck valve but short of replacing the transmission there's really no way to check. Just hoping somebody else may have a similar experience that they can share with me or maybe some of our bright minded techs out there can shed some light into this mystery. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

A copule things come to mind that could cause this, one would be fluid level/condition. Check to be sure its at the proper level and that it isnt to dark in color. 2nd and more likely is the TPS adjustment. If it is out of adjustment it could cause this.

Can you teach me how to check/adjust the tps? The tps has been replaced before when the ECL came on. It has been a while back since but does the tps normally go out of adjustment? I do all my usual maintenance myself so I'm pretty sure that the transmission's fluid level is OK but I will double check. What does the dark color of the fluid indicate other than maybe it's time to change fluids?

Dark fluid can mean different things, fluid being over heated will turn dark, material in fluid can make it dark. The tps should be adjusted using feeler gauges, not sure on the sizes at the moment, but it is set using and ohm meter and the guages. I will have to look up exact specs tuesday when I go back to work.

Shoot sorry about that musta missed your inital request. I am so sorry.

The simple way to set it with out feeler gauges is to use a volt meter and watch the voltage on the tps, there are 2 connectors one brown and one gray, the Brown one is TPS one of the wires should be white. That is your signal wire. with it plugged in and ignition in the on position but engine not running, stick a T-pin or a filed paper clip in the back of the connector where the white wire is till it bottoms out. Place your neg lead of your volt meter on the neg battery cable and your pos lead on the T-pin, see what its voltage is. Should be between .45 and .5volts. If it is not in that range loosen the 2 screws holding it to the throttle body and twist it gently till you obtain that range. Tighten it down and be sure it is still in that range. That will get it very close to dead on. Now get in the vehilce and turn the key off wait about 10 secs. turn the key to the on position, dont start the car, wait for the air bag light to go off. Turn the key back off, wait 10 secs again. Repeat this process three times. Basically you should have watched the airbag light three times. wait ten seconds after turning the key off after the third airbag light time frame and then start the car. what that does is clears the self learn in the ECM. Sometimes it doesnt and the car will require some driving to reset it.
