Hello once again. I've got a 97' D21 4x4 XE. Last week it died right down the toad and would not restart. We pulled it home and the next morn I went out to check out, dist cap was a bit corroded, so a quick trip to auto parts, New plugs, plug wires, dist. Cap and button. Fired right up. Later that night I went out, 15 min down the road, dead again. I left it sitting there over night went back to get it the next morn. fires right up, drive home and dies as I'm pulling in the driveway and wouldn't restart.
So far, I've determined it will run great as long as it hasn't warmed up, But after it warms up, it will only runs for maybe a minute and then dies, but it does usually restart. However, earlier this afternoon, after heating it up and driving to gas station, it died, back fired, and would not restart. While Turing it over, I had fuel gauge and spark tester on all cylinderS, nothing. 10 minutes later, try it again, Fire and fuel amd finally starts.
I've checked codes with a scanner, nothing shows up other than evap vent <-- old. I've checked all pins to ECU, and every sensor under the hood and throttle body. loosened and tightened all grounds? ??? I think.
My question, does anyone know if there are any grounds i may have missed or sensors that would kill the spark, and the fuel? All fuses and relays seem ok, but what ever is going on only seems to happen after it heats up. I can unplug the MAF sensor amd the truck will keep running but after a while of idling if you shut it off, no fire no fuel. I've had the truck for 16 years and it's rarely had any issue other than the basic vac. Line, starter, timing chain, etc.. key me know if you need more details and as always thanks for the service.

Possible the dist.is bad. Had the same issue. I could drive 10 - 15 miles and the motor would stop, let it sit and it would start and drive. Checked everything possible,no codes. This went on for 3 weeks. Called for a tow,by the time the truck arrived it started again. I replaced it with a aftermarket over the pond dist. It lasted less than a month. Not sure if there is away to perform a test being its an intermediate problem. You might check with a salvage yard and find a used one. Lot cheaper than a new or remanufactured. Check the exhaust for a restriction. Seems strange no fuel.

Does anyone know if the dist. Goes will it stip the fuel or vice versa? What about the crank sensor. Ive check pull a part for a dist. No luck. I hate to spend 600k bucks and it not fix it. Any thing I replace from this point forward is 200 dollars+. Hopefully I'll get lucky and pick the right part.

It's very difficult to diagnose an intermediate issue. It would be a blessing if it stopped and wouldn't start it would be easier to diagnose. The ECM controls the spark & fuel, but I would assume the engine wouldn't start. Hopefully that's not the issue because the EMC would need to be reset. If you want to try a different dist. Try AM auto parts. They sell them for $81.55 come with a 10 year warranty and offer free shipping. There brand new not remanufactured. Also you might try Car-parts.com used car parts, for a used one. Look under dist.or engine core. Where ever you find one make sure you checkout the return policy.
