Welp I've never been part of a forum before so here goes nothing? I have a 97 Nissan Hardbody Pickup 2wd 5speed 2.4ltr and it has been missing really bad!
When it is raining or even after a rain is when it seems to only do it. It is really hard to start after a rain and once it does start and i go to accelerate it boggs down bad and acts like it is missing. It is only doing this when it is in gear, in neutral it is fine.

Aside from that I've also been getting the smell of unburned fuel/gas after I've shut down the engine or even at an idle. I've checked for any moisture around the gas tank and there isn't any. Any information leading towards a diagnosis for my issues with my truck would be great thanks guys!

Welcome to the site. Check around the air box - located - just behind drivers headlight. Possible radiator support & inter fender are rusted out allowing water to enter the air box. When it rains water splashing from the front tire will cause water to enter the air box. Another thing you might want to try. Krylon makes an ignition sealer. Spray the inside & outside of the distrib.cap, plug wires. Use CAUTION when removing the cap screws, they tend to break. Check the inside of the cap for cracks - you can also spray the rotor.

I appreciate the response I'm not seeing where water could find a way into the air filter or housing so I'm going to rule that out I'm going to open up the distributor today sometime and take a closer look!

Might be the support isn't rusted out.
