I have a 1997 Maxima GXE and the check engine light has been on for the last few days. I took it to the dealership and they said that there is nothing actually wrong with the car, but make sure I always have over half a tank of fuel and eventually the light will go away. I sort of have a bad feeling about what he told me and I don't think it really makes any sense. Does anyone know how to properly get rid of that annoying check engine light??

If the light doesn't go away within 100 miles of driving I'd try to pull the code. Have a dealer or your local Autozone or whatever do it. vbx8maxima.8m.com has the manual method to pull the codes for 4th gens if you want to do that.

If it's not flashing then it's not a critical reason for the CEL to be on, so I wouldn't worry about it.

So many things can trigger a CEL. Better get the ECU code to isolate the problem. Autozone has OBDII scanners available for free. You can also go to the main page of NICO, click-on 'how-to', select Infiniti and then browse through the Technical Articles related to ECU codes.

Try to follow the self-diagnose first, then confirm it with the code pull out in Autozone.
