My onboard self diagnostics is showing code "39" when running the on board self-diagnostics for the heater / AC diagnostics. The description in the 1997 J30 field service manual in section HA (page HA-31) for "39" says "REC" underneather "Malfuntioning mode door motor position swith (including circuits)"

Does anyone know what this code means? What does "REC" stand for? Is that for "recirculate"?

I ran the diagnostics because my blower no longer functions. Everything else in the diagnostics checked out fine. I'm at 190,000 miles on my 1997 J30 so I think it may be the brushes are worn out on the blower motor? Twice withing the last 4 or so days the blower would not come on until drivng a little bit. I imagine the car moving caused the blower position to move slightly moving the blower fan from a dead spot? I'm going to see if I can pull the blower behind the glove box and make sure it is getting power to the blower connection when set to "on" or try a direct connection to 12V to see if the blower will turn on. My AC clutch is engaging so I know that is not it. I just had everything in the AC system replaced (compressor, evaporator core, expansion valve, dryer), AC was working perfectly yesrday morning.

*Not J30 specific*

The clicking you hear is likely the code for a bad blend door
Turn on the car and ac/fan to high then Rap firmly on the blower motors rear cover with a large screw drivers handle, if doing that makes the fan run you have worn out brushes.
