Two weeks ago I bought a '97 J30 that is in great shape and I love the car. About 800 miles later I was accelerating onto the freeway and the engine hesitated for a split- second and the check engine light came on. It's been a couple of days since and no more hesitations. I had the OBD read and three fault codes came up: P0120, P0732, and P1705. Since it seems to be running fine should I reset the faults, change the throttle position sensor, or take it in for deeper diagnostics? Any advice please.

Also, any advice on acquiring a service manual for this vehicle?

I got those but thanks. They all seem related to the throttle position sensor - that's why I was wondering if I should change that or if this was a one-time glitch that I could get away with resetting in the ECU...

I had that happen once in I think 1998 or 1999. Brief hesitation and engine light flickered. Never had it since. I did take it back to the dealer. They couldn't find anything. I attributed it to bad gas. I had filled up at an out of town dealer where I had never bought gas before (or since then).

Update: When leaving work yesterday I had trouble starting the car - it would seem to start but would stall immediately. I had to use the gas pedal for the first 15 - 20 seconds to keep it running then it was fine. I guess I'm not going the fault-reset route.

I called around and there's only one place around that will work on it because one of the fault codes reads Manufacture's fault. I found a site that has a throttle position sensor for about $100 so I was thinking I'd check the wiring and then change it if the wiring seemed okay.

Since I don't have a repair manual and this car is new to me, can anyone tell me where it is and what specifically to check for?

Thanks

Its on the drivers side front of engine.Right where the intake tube meets the Plenum(Intake Manifold) , you will see a little box mounted on the right side with a cable going to it . Not sure how to test it but it looks mighty easy to replace.I'll see if the FSM shows how to test it .

Got it.

I just remembered that I changed the air filter the other day - put a K&N in it. I wonder if I knocked a wire loose or something. Maybe I'll get lucky.

Thanks.

You know, I was looking at an ES300 and the J30 and this forum helped me make up my mind. I had a "support group" like this when I had my V-MAX and it was a huge help when I needed support.

Thanks again!

It looks like that section covers the wiring, ground and power but not the actual sensor. It says that is covered in Electrical Components. Do you happen to have that section or should I assume that if it isn't wiring then I need to change the sensor?
