Hey all, new here. Great site btw!

I have a '97 J30 with an auto 3.0 n/a V6.

Great car, but just developed a small problem. When the car is cold, it will start but die quickly. If you give it gas, you can keep it running. Once the car warms up a little, it runs great and the issue goes away. The engine light has never come on either.

So far, I have cleaned the throttle bodies and checked for vacuum leaks. Thats about it so far. Where is the IAC on this car? Usually I just have to change the oil in this thing...never had any issues.

TIA!

Welcome to NICO!!!

Have you pulled any codes from the ECU when it dies?

Do you think you have water mixed in the fuel, when the car starts water dilutes the gas? Try using a product that removes water. Condensation is a spring time problem in the car if you regularly run your tank below the last quarter of fuel before fill up. Condensation(which now is water) accumulates from the winter.

Have you tried cleaning the MAF?

Thanks for the reply!

This issue actually started in the winter. I would assume if there was a condensation issue, it would have disappeared by now (many, many fill ups since the issue started).

I haven't pulled any codes...the engine light has never came on...but I guess it's worth a try. I'll run up to Autozone tomorrow and see if they can do it for me.

What's the best way to clean the MAF? If it was dirty, wouldn't the car have a more consistent running problem? I have 2 other vehicles that are GM's. One has never given me a MAF issue (Tahoe) and the other was always having MAF issues ('87 Buick Grand National). The GN now has an aftermarket fuel injection system that is speed density..problem solved there

Maybe the water temp sensor ??Not the one that controls the gauge. The actual name evades me.

First guess was the IACV. They don't always throw codes. There is a small idle orifice near the throttle plate that can get clogged, might want to check that.

It could be the temperature sensitive Air Regulator that is primarily responsible for setting cold start and maintaining cold engine idle speed.
