Hi all -

As the subject says - I have a 97 I30 with a 5 speed. Just under 200,000 miles & the locking diff. (V code) & transmission are going bad.

Mainshaft (I believe) has been whining for about 40,000. I say mainshaft, as the whine is present at all times (neutral & in gear) except when clutch pedal is depressed. The unit has had 90 weight in it. Would ATF be better in a cold climate?

Now the output bearings & therefore seals are going.

I've searched for a used trans./diff. & found one - 140,000 miles & $1500 + shipping from CA to VT (300+). This strikes me as excessive - not to mention another can of worms with that many miles.

Will a Maxima trans./diff. fit? These seem to be far more available & much less ($500-900). Would I need different axleshafts or other items?

Thanks!

You should post this in the Maxima/I30 forum, you'll probably get replies.

Will do -

Thought the "OnLine Mechanic" might be the best place to start - but you may well be right.

I appreciate your help!

According to moderator Nistech, who is a factory Nissan tech, Infiniti and Nissan have completely separate systems, which means that even factory techs would have a hard time answering this question. Unless someone has intimate knowledge of both cars, you might be stuck without an answer. You can copy/paste into the Nissan Online Mechanic forum as well.

This is more true with more current production vehicles.

the Max and I30/I35 as well as the pathfinder and QX4 are the same vehicle. Those 2 models are the most a like of any of the crossover vehicles. their power trains are identical. in the late 90's the only vehicle that was completely different then what the other line had was the Q45 otherwise there were alot of cross over between the 2 lines. Todays vehicles built in the last 2 yrs its harder to find the crossover except for the obvious Z and G and Armada and QX56 but even these models have some substantial differences mostly in their trim packages.
