I read through the axle sticky which shows that 96-97 4 cyl hardbody trucks came with the H233B rear axle and I have verified that my axle code is HG46 on the sticker.

I am looking into getting a limited slip from 4x4 parts (AC), however they only list the part for 86-95 H233B hardbody/pathfinder and nothing for 96-97 with an H233B. Looks like only V6 models got the H233B up until 96 when the 4 cyl got them (not sure if any 96-97 were made with the V6)??

The only 1997 4 cylinder LSD is for a C200.

Any ideas on what may be different with an H233B starting in 96, and more importantly which year/model parts I could use? Might it just be a typo or is there really a difference there?

the LSD from 4x4 parts will work. the C200 will not work in the H233 axle. however if you have a R200 frt axle the C200 can be modified to fit that.

LSDs mainly came in the pathys. thing to look out for is the spline count, 31 or 33. 33s were used in the 98 & up frontiers and pathys IIRC.

you may just want to look into finding a pathy in a j/y with a LSD and using it. you can tighten it up with new clutches.

I will have to look into that. One thing I was wondering is wether a limited slip carrier would be needed for the the clutch style LSD either from the Pathfinder or if I get it from 4x4 parts.

Also, how effective is a clutch style LSD if you have a tire in the air? My main traction concerns are winter driving (that is why I wanted an LSD vs locker) and also to help out when going through rutted sections of trail where one tire is off the ground or (lightly loaded) and spins. Nothing hardcore.
