I have searched and searched and there doesn't seem to be anyone out there stocking catalytic converters for my 97 Q. Does anyone know where I can get them?

Are you sure you need them? Has the car been running diesel?

My engine light came on and the dealership said it coded for the left converter. They said it was not something that they often see so they reset it and blamed it on a recent fuel system cleaning and some residuals flowing around through the system. But, not ten miles later, the engine light relit and it reads the same code. Now, they say that I might need to replace the cat but of course the price is way too high for my 97 Q with 104k. Any thougts?

I would assume that year has front and rear O2 sensors on each side, to compare what's going into the cat., and what's coming out. Do you know if they've ruled out the O2 sensors? If so I think your best bet to save money would be to try to find one out of a salvage yard... check out http://www.car-part.com

Heath,

Thanks for the reply. I did have one of my O2 sensors recently replaced by the dealership. I also had my air mass flow sensor replaced. The mechanic there that I always have look at my car has been working with me for a couple of years now and has been the one replacing bad parts. I trust that he is pretty thorough and he wouldn't just be trying to get me to spend money. I will look up the site that you referred me to in hopes of finding a used driver's side cat. Thanksdj ii

I am not so sure of their diagnosis.

In any event, if you are not dumping the car within 12 months, you want OEM new, not used nor aftermarket.

There is a reason OEM cost more.

You need to ensure the O2 sensors are tested and shown to be working properly B4 changing the convertor. The convertors DO get damaged by even a short misfiring sequence sometimes--like when a coil shorts for instance.
