I've seen a couple good deals on both a 96 Q and a 95 Q. I decided a while ago that I wanted a 95/94 over the 90/92 , but is there any difference between the 95 and the 96? Thanks in advance for any advice.

96 is generally acknowlrdged to be down on power vs 94/95 dur to deletion of VVT.Also has OBD2 vs teh ODB1 of earlier cars, this make sit harder to modify buy easier to troubleshoot.

Other wise little difference.

OBD I vs. OBD II. No intake cam advance on the 1996. A lot of information is in the previous posts.

In either case, at this age, I would buy the car with the verifiable service history and that looks better after an inspection by a senior Infiniti service technician.

I would recommend a 94/95 personally... There is no difference between 94/95 (well some, i could tell you :) but nothing youd notice)... Like they said 96 has no VVT which has less power, but IMHO you may/may not notice it... Depends how hard you drive it, as VVT is only in the higher RPMs..

Also, something else to remember is OBDII is much eaiser to diagnose..... You cna have autozone scan your codes for free, or pick up a code scanner for under $100 (something like that?), and for the OBDI you have to take out the ECU, count the blinks and all that fun stuff! it does make it harder to modify somewhat (IE no performance ECU), but interestingly enough OBDII is somewhat more "compatible" with mods... Meaning if you wanted to run mild boost you probably could without any mods, as the MAF would be able to handle it..

Other than that, for most people they are basically the same car...

Also another thing to consider is my Q is for sale... check it out http://www.q45.org/wes . You wont find a better deal there!!!

I advise to stay away from the 96 - we recently acquired one and due to being so overwhelmed by family visiting, job pressures and moving on top of our 1st 92 having a major breakdown, I was not present enough (of mind) to really catch some of the corner cutting that Infiniti did on MY96. Our 92 has much higher quality interior parts. Our 96 has PLASTIC door handles (both inside and out)! Arm rests (both doors and center consol) are vinyl (these are leather in in our 92). Headliner is noticeably cheaper (is more worthy of a Honda Accord). Passnger grab handles also scream CHEAP. The sunroof is no longer 1 touch open. The door handle panels (with the power window switches integrated into them) are made of a different plastic that also screams CHEAP!!!!!!! The overall effect is, that to me, there is a noticable difference in feel when you sit in these cars side by side. The lame (again CHEAP and FAKE) wood grain panels they placed on the doors also is sub par. Don't know if the 94-95s are any better. I would hope they are. Lord only knows what they might have done under the sheet metal to save cost! I HOPE is was only in the interior. The major thing that did sway me to buy the car was that #1 we desperately needed another car #2 this car had full service records and was really clean. I'm not as bothered as it is my wife's/daughters car and will be trashed in short order.

94-96q interior is the same, only differences I can tell is that the radio and ac plastic windows were curved in 94 and made streight in 95&96 to cure reflection problems.somewhere along the line, the one touch sunroof open feature disappeared.center and door armrests are genuine leather in 94,95,and 96-maybe previous owner recovered worn leather with vinyl in above posters car?

My '96 has leather door panels, armrest, etc. No vinyl that I can tell. I will tell you that the leather in my Q45 is far far better than the leather in my wife's 2003 Navigator. You can really tell where the leather ends in the Nav - the Q looks like all leather. My door handles seem to be made of metal as well. BTW, I'm selling my Q. I live in north Atlanta if interested.

re: wood inserts.

On my 94, I believe the shifter and ashtray are real. However, the door inserts seem like plastic.

My position on the 94 interior is that it is better than first gen...and I agree the leather is much better than on the EB Expedition.

You also get the tweeters in the 94-96

I forgot about the sunroof. My sunroof on the 90 stopped working about 4 years ago. My fault for not maintaining it correctly.

I'm no expert on the comparison of 95-96, but no Q has leather door panels.

Excellent question. And I'm quite certain my 1992 door panels are a high quality vinyl. Theyve actually survived compared to my hideous seats.

My early model silver '94 (02/93) has the curved plastic on the radio & A/C, but the late model balck (01/94) is flat, like Wes'.

The console armrest is leather, the console sides, dash covering, and upper/lower door panels are a super high quality vinyl, that does last better than the leather, and feels softer. The actual door pulls, and arm rests are leather on the doors, though. The small panels (inserts) of both cars is leather, because the read doors on the silver one are shriveling up, due to lack of leather conditioning.

All the handles are chrome, and some kind of metal, where I understand the '96 has a chrome plated plastic - I have not seen this in person.

Neither one of my 2, has the one-touch sun roof. My 2000 I30t has it, and I don't really like it. In 2002, they had a 2 or 3 position roof, where you could push the button, and it would go to a pre-determined position. I do like the one-touch up AND down buttons on the driver AND passenger side of the I30t, though.

The big kicker is the VVT, in the '94 & '95 models. I think this is what gives me the kick-in-the-pants, when I am passing someone.

The problem, is that with OBD-I, you need Infiniti to check out the car with a Consult, where on the '96, with the OBD-II, just about anyone can check out the car, but I DO recommend you use the Infiniti dealership, anyway.

I would not hesitate to get a 1996, if the car was well taken care of.

I'd argue that no 1st or 2nd gen Q's had a one touch sunroof.

My 92 and every 90-93 I've driven (a half dozen) has a one-touch sunroof. The factory replacement switch I bought is also a one-touch unit.

My late 95 (6/95) doesn't have the one-touch roof. It also has flat radio / AC panels.

Leather on the doors is limited to the handle and attached parts o the panel.

Upper door panels on ALL G50 Q's is a bizarre vinyl-coated backing that simulates leather quite well, to the extent of "shriveling" with age.

Jesda, Weasy or other 1st gen owners.

Could you post a pic of the unit and/or of the sunroof in your Q. I'd like to see if the switch is comparable. Thanks

I love my 96 & don't feel it is slow at any time. Hauls out at any time. Faster than my dad's 90. The interior is very well made. I too would love a one touch button for my sun roof.

I'll vouch for the 96Q as well.........mine has 145k ......extremely reliable and completely stock....and very fast.......I've beaten alot of cars that cost 50k and more than mine (I love it).

I ran ....15.8 / 90.06 in the quarter mile.....and I know it can do better.

The difference between the 94/95 is probably 2 or 3/10's of a second. In real world driving I don't think you will see a dramatic difference.

Lets see some more time slips for comparison.

Gotta disagree on this one. Both of my 90 Qs have leather uppers, but vinyl textured lowers. I've noticed this with the panels off - they have the split hide look on the back edges of the leather. I'm not sure when the change took place...They even used leather on the color keyed insert on the glove compartment.

You need to remember, neither car is "fast". They are fun to drive, but it's not a sports car where 1-2 tenths is all the difference.

Around town my light 4-cyl Accord felt "faster" than the Q, because of gearing, looser suspension (dive/squat sensation), and because it didnt take a whole lot of work to get it moving.

But in terms of the numbers, the Q is "faster".

Its strange.

I agree. I would say, without doing a chemical test, that both my 1994's had the same thing, leather upper, textured vinly lower. The upper door panels match the console, steering wheel, and shifter knob exactly. The "A", "B", & "C" pillars are the same padded vinyl, as the dash, dash face, console, and lower door panels.

I agree with that as well.....

They would have had to spend more money to make the vinyl look like leather than to just put leather on.

90-93 interior rocks. My grey seats and door panels look like sharkskin -- and just as tough.
