I just purchased a 96 N/A 2+2 to replace my MINT 93 that was stolen last year. I was excited to hear that the 96 is OBDII compliant but I have been told that Nissan had to sacrifice the Variable Cam Timing to be compliant. I really don't understand the relationship between the two but I would like to restore it if possible.

Does anyone know how to do it? Is it worth it? If I do an engine swap do I have to find another 96?

Any feedback will be appreciated. I searched on "96 variable timing" but got no results.

Thanks, MosFetMan

Nissan had to do the same thing with the V8 in the Q45. My understanding is that the change was emissions-related.

Because the '96 is the only year that used OBDII, swapping in an engine from any other model year will A) be a pain in the butt and B) not be legal. You wouldn't be able to pass inspection with a non-OBDII motor in a '96 model year car.

OBD2 doesn't like much overlap and not only was VVT dropped but the cam duration was decreased on intake and exhaust cams.

What is the protocol of the data? The ScanGauge unit is connected to this port but cannot read data. I tried PWM, CANSF, ISO, VPW, CANLF, KWPS, KWPF, CANSS, and CANLS but no joy. Any help with this? Johan
