My car is idling fast on cold starts and takes several minutes for RPMs to drop low enough to shift into drive. What do you think is wrong and how can you fix it ?

The engine should idle higher when first started and than lower as the engine warms up, is this something it never did before? In colder climates, (didn't notice where you were from) it may take longer for the rpm's to drop to a normal idle.

Blip the throttle a few times and that will drop the RPM's. Its basically running at a higher rpm to allow the engine to warm up. I live in California and mine does the same thing. Its completely normal
