Does any one know much about the 91 560 SEC. My brother just purchased one and is convinced that it is the ultimate car. I told him I could have saved him alot of money and got him a much cleaner newer Q that would likely perform better. He says it was that last of the great Mercedes. Sticker price new was over $91,000. I think he paid about $11,000 with about 120,000 miles. Claims he could sell it for an easy $15,000.

Well, drive it and tell us. There was a good referential post to a Mercedes board earlier (use search), but I would have to say that the suceeding generations of the S series had problems that would make this board a wasteland if the same faults were built into a Q, or a J, or an I.

Maybe he'll race you for pink slips? I'd bet against him on acceleration, top speed, handling, and longevity.

Many MB aficionados claim to be the S560 of that generation the last great ones.

Having said that you are faster than him in a same year Q.Also up keep in a Q is MUCH less (yes I am not kidding).

Your 96 is probab;ly pretty evenly matched in performance cuz its a much more modern engine making up for its smaller displacement, tho a bit slower than the 90-93's.

The 560 is a very nice car to be sure, but I seem to recall that many early 90's V8 MB's had chain guide problems similair to those of an old Q.

Am unceratin if the 91 560 falls into that group.

It would probably be a good idea for your friend to reseach this issue.

As an owner of a 92 400e, I think the Q45 is a better machine than similar vintage MBZs.

Trust me, you'll see that the 560sec will have many electrical as well as mechanical problems crop up. The might not be major in a mehcanical sense but they will be in a $$$$$ sense!

I do think the 560sec is a fine car and he is right: It is one of the last great Mercedes. The next generation of MBZ, though more modern and better equiped, are made with much cheaper materials.

If I were to do it over again I'd would have bought another Q. Q has more creature comforts, much more responsive transmission, better/more durable cheaper to fix AC (2K repair for me that I'm putting off!), better ergonomics, better NHV.

The 560sec may handle better (my 400e certainly does) depending on setup.

Check out this forum if you're curious: Lots of good MB info here.

I'd love to have a late 80s S-class coupe if I had the money to treat it right!!

A friend of mine had a 300SEL sedan (6 cylinder) and it was nice, but he liked driving my Q more!

:D
