The wife left the vanity light on mistakingly over night. Gotta Jump. Ran around the block so battery could charge. Car dies in the middle of the ride. Tried to start. Car starts up again for 5 seconds twice. Then nothing. I'm getting a crank but wont turn over. I took the fuel pump out and hot wire tested it. It pumps. How do you run Self Diagnostic when the car will not turn over? I appreciate any help on this matter. Thanx in advance.

Ok. narrowed the problem to the FuelPumpControlUnit. Can somebody show me an illustration of the jumper work around until. I can purchase a new fuel pump and FPCU unit?

Here you go. This is the connector that plugs into the FPCU (background in the pic near the PR speaker). Build a jumper to ground from the pin shown and see how she runs. Any burning/scorching/melting on the connection on the FPCU?

Thanks Goody. I don't see any burning around the plug, but I need to look closer. Let me see if this works. Brb.

Goody, I did find burning around the ground you sent me to on the plug and the Module. So I need to replace the module and pump soon. I seen a module @ the yard but no pump. Also when I first connected the jump wire and turned the car on. It ran shortly and then stalled. I check the fuses and the 15amp had blown. So I replaced w/ a 20amp and it ran. I wonder if the battery I recently put in this car is big enough. The battery the car came w/ is bigger but has a small whole around the top (+) post. So I replaced the entire battery but didn't realize the battery I bought was smaller than the one taken out. Do you think this could be the cause of my problems. W/ the fuel pump and module? Thanx in advance.

I'm no battery expert but I'm sure the replacement battery has to meet the same amp requirements as the one you took out.

If you are good with a solder gun take the cover off the FPCU and trace that ground connection to where it meets the circuit board. The fix may be as easy as remelting the old solder (or remove old solder and re-solder). Some owners have done this repair and saved a lot of $$ vs. having to replace the FPCU. Check the solder for the remaining pins where they contact the circuit board.

I don't think an incorrect battery would cause these problems but it will eventally consume the alternator. If you have 120k miles or more on your Q the fuel pump is due for changing and you'll start to see weak solder joints causing other issues throughout the car.

NOw Goody, how do you go about getting the module down? I'm pretty sure I can solder it back together, w/ the proper tutorials. I really need to run a diagnostic on it now that we got it running. So I know exactly whats going on w/ this 1996 Q45 w/ 140mi. on it. It also has a whine to it. I'm still try'n figure that out.

The two bolts holding in the FPCU have to be removed from the top. Remove the seat bottom, seat back and rear speaker deck.
