OK this is NOT one of those, "Hook me up with a shop that'll pass my KA-T". I want to pass emissions legally with my KA-T. I'm in NY btw where they require you to do it once a year.

I posted this in the regional forums too, I apologize ahead of time if I'm not supposed do that. I thought I should post here too since there are a few KATs here in NY.

I haven't installed my KA-T yet but I want to make the necessary preparations so I can pass with the turbo on. If necessary I'll convert back to NA to pass but I'm sure there's an easier way to go about it.

So here are my questions, if all the emissions are in tact with EGR installed, all sensors functioning, theoretically I should throw no codes so I should pass the ECU scan. Right?

Will boost leak into the downpipe from the EGR when its connected? or is there a valve there that will close?

Why remove the emission components anyway?

I've done some searching and came up with one thread that touches on passing emissions for OBDII on a '96.Here's the thread, 5th post down.Slomoe says he passed his KAT with the egr hooked up to the DP.zerothread?id=146059

Another question, has anyone used one of these O2 simulators?http://www.o2simulator.com/ind..._id=9

Last, I noticed on the NY DMV site you can register a home made or custom car if you live in upstate NY which I do. Has anyone done this? They say not all cars pass and are given custom status. These cars do not have to go through the yearly emissions test. I can keep my KAT as is w/o modifying it.Here's the sitehttp://www.nysdmv.com/homemade.htm

i'm pretty sure you can pass emission. the only problem is the visual.

you should just smog it as an NA and then install the turbo

that way you have a year to figure stuff out

I dont think thats what he want to do. plus NY is different than CA, do they actually have visual check? once a year of smog really sucks.

You can actually use a resistor to trick the ECU into thinking that the EGR system is working fine. You can then disable it, and run the tube anyway to make it look like your EGR's hooked up.

The main problem though is visual. Depending on your state and local laws, you might not be able to pass with a turbo. Need to do some research on your local emissions testing.

I'm due in December so I have quite some time. I also was driving for 2 years with an expired emissions sticker. Luckily I didn't get a ticket for it.The last guy I went to do emissions didn't do a visual even though they are supposed to. They didn't check if the cat was there or not. I had two codes (I was told you can have two and pass, 3 you fail) one for the rear O2 which isn't pluged in. (long story behind that one) and a code for the knock sensor. I'm guessing it needs to be replaced.

Assuming I throw no codes after replacing the knock sensor and simulating the rear O2. I should pass if they do not do a visual like last time since its just an ecu scan.

I also stumbled on this.http://www.jgstools.com/turbo/...74263EGR bung for custom downpipes. Not sure if its a standard FNPT fitting, its quite expensive but I might just bite the bullet and get it if it means passing emissions. If anyone knows the exact size, 1/2" FNPT or whatever it is I could just get it on McMasterCar for pennies.

Thats what I thought as well when I read the DMV site but it also says if your car does not already have a Vin#, the DMV will assign you one. So that got me thinking some modified street cars could be registered under a custom car. As for the codes, yes 2. Knock and rear o2 which are easy fixes.

I've heard of the resistor thing. I'll have to look into that if I still throw a code with the EGR tube still in place.

Another question....If I hook up the EGR tube to my custom downpipe, will I leak boost through there? Or is there a valve that will close when I'm under boost? I'm not familiar with how the EGR system works. Also, Why do people remove emissions stuff anyway? is it only to reduce the # of places where a boost/vac leak can spring up from?

If you throw any 1 code on a OBD2 scan you fail.

Yea you can just hook the egr up to your downpipe and it will be fine.

Thanks for the input 480sx, I'm sure thats the way I'm going to go. Keep my emissions and connect my egr tube to the custom dp.

As for the 2 code allowance, that's what the mechanic told me. I was trying to pick his brain when I was there. The system passed me with those 2 codes. Might be different from NY to VA.

Does anyone know the size of the EGR bung to the DP?
