Hi, I have a 1996 Nissan Maxima which I take very good care of. it has a lot of highway Miles.... around 120K... My Check Engine Came on. Well I went to check the brain and accidentally reset it before getting the codes. I know the check engine light will come on again. The thing is after I reset it I started the car and tried to see what kind of problem I had if any. I know it idles rough around 3 instead of the usual 5 or 6. Also when i give it gas and let off it almost stalls. I idled the car then popped the hood. I notice around where the air intake is there is a clicking noise. About 2 every second. I see three cables going into 3 things. They look like sensors. COuld a sensor cause my car to idle like it will almost stall and if so would it cause some sort of clicking noise on this car???

Thanks...

Any Response or ideas are appreciated.

attempt to pul the codes again even if the lights not on there may be a code stored. it takes 2 failures to trigger the light.

When i pulled the code it reset to 5 - 5 which means no failure..... This is by turning the brain with the screw... Do you think a machine could get something off if turning the screw reports a flashing code of 5 slow then 5 fast??

and what would explain the ticking from where the air goes in??

there are numerous relays and solonoids in that area that could be causeing the noise. Uncertain which it is. That is why I requested the code. It could be the idle control trying to open thats why it is idleing so low but not 100% sure. drive it and give it another shot pulling codes. I assume your using a FSM for instructions to do it.

It was the Knock Sensor that went bad hence the idling problem... It detects something and changes the timing by 8 degrees.... If I would have driven on this for a period of time it could of done some damage.. All fixed now... thanks : )

WOW that thing was a pain to get to... now I just have to replace my Front Main Seal, Rear Main Seal.. Water Pump, Clutch... Should be a job... Plus I know there are 3 seals inside the cover by the timing chain that needs to be replaced. But I will just have someone do all of that.. Might as well have the timing chain and gears replaced too since it is all right there.....

Do you think this can be done without dropping the engine.???

it can but a hoist is very helpful in the process .with all you want to reaseal I would just yank the engine and do it on a stand.

My Friend seems to think we can lift the left side up and work on everything that way... He seems to think that even though the chain is a non wear item to go ahead and replace it and all the gears... I thought the gears and timing chain never wore out... I guess he could be right... I feel like I am rebuilding this car from the inside out.. but I know it will prolong it and a lot of people don;t have this luxury to keep a good car running for a longer period of time...

I havent seen a problem with the chains on the A32 yet. but replacing old parts with new cant hurt it. especially if you have that kind of money available.
