Found a 96 Maxima on CL for $1500.

158K milesAutomaticBlack leather :PAC

Went to drive it and noticed that:

Check engine light is onBrakes squeak a bitThe Bose radio turns on but there's no audioThere's a small-to-medium dent by left front fender

The owner agreed to go with me to Autozone to get the engine light code/s read. So maybe he has nothing to hide?

Would you buy it if the code/s indicate nothing major?

Thanks for your time..

Depending on the cause of the check engine light, it may be worth it. It will probably need a new radio, though. Squeaky brakes isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I'd pull the wheels off and have a look...if the pads are really worn, see if he'll throw in new ones.

Thanks for the replies.

His original price was $1700 and he said he won't go lower than $1500 and I said "OK." But I guess it all depends on what the trouble code/s indicate.

I saw Bose radios for sale on ebay for around $100.

allensteiner, how did you get a maxima for $860?? What year is it??

Wow, I'm glad I took the car to Autozone.

Here are the trouble codes:

P0600 - ?P0325 - Knock sensor conditionP1447 - Control system purge flowP0400 - EGR valveP0500 - Speed sensor

Is the car worth buying?

There are just too many problems with this car, based on your test drive as well as the DTC codes. P0600 indicates loss of communication between the ECM (Engine Control Module) and the A/T (Automatic Transmission) Control Unit which may be due to bad harness or control unit.

The problems above are indication of car neglect or even abuse. The suspension components are probably shot and the transmission is questionable.

In CA a car must pass emission inspection before it can be sold. I believe TX has a similar requirement but may not be as rigid as in CA.
