Please help... I am a newb when it comes to my wifes Maxima... my 94Q hasnt had this issue either.

Car was running great, parked it over night and in the A.M. the starter cranks but it will not start. Doesnt even sound like it is trying. Pulled the top hose off of the fuel filter and turned the key on and cranked and dry as a bone. Fuel pumps not making any noise.

The CEL is on and my friend is bringing in his OBDII reader for me today.

2 things...

1) Could a non-fuel related problem (like one of the crank sensors going bad) cause the fuel pump to be inoperative?

2) I was searching for the better part of last night both in the car and on the internet for the location of the fuel pump relay. The fuel pump fuse is fine. The FSM shows a diagram of the relay but no location. There are some posts that say under the drivers side kick panel but when I removed it all that is there is the anti lock brake control module

I did also add in a few gallons of fresh gas just in case the gauge was wrong. I dont hear that pump at all.

Any suggestions please let me know. Thanks in advance.

You might check fuse #32. From what I remember on my 95and 98 Maxima, this fuse controls electricity to the fuel pump. See if its blown first

You normally would pull this fuse if you were changing your fuel filter

the relay should be under the hood in one of 3 relay boxes - i'm just too lazy to go outside and check which one

there's also a fuel pump control module inside the left wheel well ( inside the trunk) that needs to be checked. if all works check the fuel pump electrical connections with a multi meter. if everything works correctly then it's oribably the fuel pump itself.

OK... wanted to make sure that there was no other reason for the fuel pump not to work other than defective fuel related components.

I will check under the hood as soon as I get home for the fuel pump relay. I saw the 2 boxes one on the forward end of the drivers side and one on the passengers side but the diagrams on both the boxes said nothing about fuel pump relays. I will check for the 3rd box that i didnt see, and check the wiring to the controller in the trunk that I was unaware of.

I already checked the fuse but thanks for suggesting it.

My friend didnt bring the OBDII reader today

Thanks for the info.

I found the 3rd box but none out of all 3 have the fp relay (at least noted on the cover) I pulled the codes and there was only one 0401 intake air temp sensor. So... I'm not any further yet... will check for that controller in the trunk next....

ok i found it. if you have abs and you remove the drivers side kick panel (the lowest to the floor on the drivers side NOT the fuse panel) you need to remove the abs control unit and there is a soft metal looking shield behind it. remove the soft metal shield which is glued in place and behind it is a bracket held in place by 2 screws. remove the screws and the relay closest to the rear of the car is the fuel pump relay. there are plenty of posts that say they are behind this kick panel but none that say remove the abs control box and the flexible shield behind it to get to the relays. but guess what.... swapped it with the a/c relay... still no pumpy...

Time for FSM section EC Page 274 for diagnostics.
