96 Max SE engine questions

I have a 96 Max SE with the VQ30DE and auto transmission. i just had the transmission flushed, and i just checked it and it was low (I checked it with the motor on, and in neutral). but i was wondering if you check it with the engine off, or on and in neutral. And does anyone know how hard a transmission swap is on these cars? I also have a small leak coming from the oil pan. is there any certain hot spot this would come from? ex: sensor seal or pan seal etc. . . Also, do the timing chains ever need to be replaced?

You check the transmission fluid when it is fully warmed up and in park.....
