With the '96 Q45 I recently purchased were included the original (well worn) key fob, "a" master key and "a" black security key and no wallet key or key number plate.

My black security will only open the front driver's side door and nothing else, and will not start the car. The "master" key will only start the car and will not open any locks. I can make this arrangement work, but I want to at least figure out what happened here and what my options are. My theory is that the ignition and door lock were independently replaced at some point with new keys and locks incompatible with each other or the factory condition.
Am I going to have to replace all the locks on the car if I have any hope of sorting out this mess?

I recall q451990 mentioning that these locks can be rekeyed: 1995-q45-stolen-then-recovered-advice-n ... l#p6693905

A skilled locksmith can rekey them. My dealership would routinely replace the ignition switch when they would fail, but say that you'd have to carry the old key for the other locks... Or they'd have the new ignition switch rekeyed to match your doors, but then you'd end up with an aftermarket key instead of the shiny new factory key that comes with the lock.

Well, I have found a source for factory key blanks, so that wont be a problem. Does anyone know how the security keys work? What i mean is, how they are prevented from opening the glove box/trunk? Should the pattern on the security key be identical to the master key? I assume that the groove down the center of the master key is what allows it to open the trunk and glove box, but I want to confirm this so I can provide as much info to my locksmith as possible.

From a quick glance, the groove looks like the difference. There's an eBay seller with both styles of blanks.
