96' ka24de in s13. smog leagal?

i've used the flashing red button a lot but couldn't find anything on it. everyone had something to say about the sr,ca,rb only. i was wondering if a ka24de would pass smog if swaped into a 89-90 shell. i was told that smog has certain limits for certain cars and motors.

As long as you keep the emissions equipment...you can legally drop an USDM S14 motor into a USDM S13.

It's legal as long as the engine came from the same class of vehicle (passenger car, truck, van, etc) and that the engine is either as old as or newer than the car.
