Anywhere that I can get an aftermarket OEM spoiler with the same paint color as my J? I've decided that since its RWD, and I'm doing a lot of highway driving, that a spoiler may help with my fuel economy.

First, tell me if I'm off my rocker or not.Second, let me know where to get one!

I do not know about the fuel economy but I got one on E Bay for around $25and paid a paint body shop $136 to paint it.

Spoliers are purely aesthetic. It won't improve your fuel economy unless you drive a Porsche, TT or Crossfire.

If you want to increase you fuel economy do the folowing:

(1.) gentle acceleration(2.) anticipate light changes and use engine braking to help you stop by taking your foot off the gas.(3.) Ease off gas when over going downhill, let gravity take over, more often than not you'll stay at speed. When going up hill, use gentle acceleration.(4.) Use the cruise control.

I put mine in Neutral when going downhill or approaching a stop light.and use the cruise control every chance I get.

The spoilers aren't on those 3 cars you mentioned for feul economy. They are there to keep the car on the road at high speed by creating down force which would actually DECREASE fuel economy. Not that anyone driving any of those cars would care too much about the mpgs they are getting.

If you have to use the brakes at a stop sign or light you have wasted gas. This is quoted from an article on Hyper Millers

You can try your local junkyard. You just have to take it to a reliable body shop to get it installed & painted to match the rest of the exterior.

& spoilers don't increase MPG; just downforce. & that's if they're installed correctly. Refer to the Motorweek thread for a bad example of that.

Nuts.

Oh well. I'd like the aesthetics of a spoiler on my J anyways.

Of course I'd love to get a HICAS version of the J even more.

The J's look sexy with or without a spoiler. I kind of wish I bought one instead of the Civic...oh well.

I don't know much of the HICAS versions, though. I did hear that they were good for auto-x & (attempting to) drift.

3,800 lbs and auto-x? I don't care how much hp you have or what steering you have, that's just too much weight.

And the HICAS attempts to keep the rear from breaking loose which makes it harder to drift.

I found myself annoyed with my J, actually. Can't burn rubber unless going around a corner. I really want a 6 spd manual transmission in the thing.

Considering the spoiler, I bought a stock spoiler and put it on myself (I installed it a little higher than normal, which I like better - not so crowded-looking in the back). However, concerning the color, I bought mine in super black - this gives it a more custom look. In addition, I added a super black hood scoop which evens out the color scheme (the car is maroon) and also gives it a meaner look. In fact, I have yet to see a J with a hood scoop... anyone else out there? It seems awkward to install most custom spoilers because of the rolling slant of the trunk, which in turn would also put your custom spoiler at rear windshield level and hinder your rear view. I haven't noticed any difference in fuel economy, but it does seem to add a little drag to the super light rear. Peeling out can be done without holding in the brake, you just have to slam the gas pedal down, make sure your A/C is off, and that your trunk is light. This won't work if you have fat hookers in the back... Otherwise, play with brake and accelerator combos.

The hood scoop would have to be just for show, as the air intake is in the lower front drivers side of the engine compartment. Would just add air resistance and block part of the drivers view.As for spoilers, unless you are going way over a hundred miles an hour they are just for show, the down force is negligible at lower speeds. plus adds extra weight to the car which would make it accelerate even slower.

I will post pictures of my car so far here soon. The hood scopp looks pretty sweet in my opinion. It gives it a meaner, sportier look. It is just for show as of right now, but can be made functional which I am considering doing. Nevertheless, it looks good to me.

The HICAS if anything...would keep one from drifting. Then again, who does that anymore anyway, especially in a J30?Anyway, the T version has (slightly) higher spring / shock rates, HICAS, the wing, and the "million spoke" mesh. But in reality, the driving difference is minimal, but I admittedely prefer the T model out of principle...but would rather not have the nearly 100lbs the RWS adds.

Quote »I put mine in Neutral when going downhill or approaching a stop light.[/quote]I do that too with my 240SX. I have once seen as high as 28.5 mpg in mixed driving using such methods. I also turn off the AC up big inclines, and coast down to redlights (rather than the typical accelerate until time to brake). But even on all highway driving, I have never broken the 30 mpg barrier with it...but then again the EPA quotes 20/25, so anything over that on a 19 year old car (with original everything) is pretty good.

Errr, uhhh, the car has an LSD with a tall final drive ratio...so it is not really supposed to spin, burn tires, etc. Curious how old are you, and is this a J30 or Eclipse we are talking about?

But on the lighter side, maybe you should swap in a non-LSD from a S13 and burn the tires all day long (but please don't do in public). I would have to wonder what people would think seeing a rare, expensive (looking) luxury car with someone in it raising hell. They would surely be thinking "joy ride", or he borrowed daddy's car, lol.

Seriously though, if you simply want peppier acceleration, get the 4.10 from a Z32 (and matching speedo gear)...no need for a transmission swap. Then again, a 5 (or 6) speed in a J30 would be like an automatic in a Miata...out of character. But if you want a sports car, buy one. Nissan, Toyota, etc, can build them better than we can, and starting with a 35XX lb car tuned for softish ride, noise isolation, etc yet wanting to make a sports car out of it doesn't make any sense.

But let's face it...I am a little confused overall, as you want more fuel economy, yet want a car that will burn rubber (yet you bought a J30, far from a good choice for either purpose)?

Either way, I will quit ragging ya'for a second...let me know what color your car is, and I will see if I have access to a color matched spoiler for your car...as my local pick and pull has 4 J's. If you can find one color matched, that will easily save you $100, and will be likely to match better. But in reality, it will do no more than change the looks of the car. You might want to just save the $1XX for your sports car fund.
