Have a 96 I30 with a V6, 140k miles. Yesterday it pulled DTC P0400 and P0325 during a PA emissions test. I know the knock sensor is an expensive PITA job. Here in PA, they have a $150 emission waiver policy. That is, if the mechanic makes a good faith effort to fix the problem, and spends more than $150, then they let you "pass" the test, even though you really still fail.

I might be stuck with either a big bill or trying to trade the car in. Neither is a good option now, so I thought I'd post here. Any ideas? Thanks.

I talked to the local Infiniti dealer, and their tech said that the EGR code is the one to pursue, and it usually clears up the knock sensor code. I'll post my results.

Sounds good, let us know.

You can use the '96 I30 FSM to help troubleshoot:

Should be the em.pdf

Thanks for the FSM link. I found the diagnostic procedure on EC-200, but nothing in EM.

Doing some research, it looks like I could replace the knock sensor myself. Found the part here:

for about $70.

This procedure looks right to me:

My mechanic wants to replace the knock sensor first, while Infiniti would diagnose the EGR fault first. Still deciding what I'm going to do.
