My 96 maxima does same thing and I moderately hit the dash over the speedometer and it works again. I've been looking for a dash unit on ebay but now I have a window problem that takes presidence.

My 1996 Nissan Sentra got the EXACT same problem. Just recently too soon after the engine service light went on. I have not figured out what is the condition that makes the speedometer work all of a sudden. With mine it seems as if the car needs to gain certain speed for it to start reacting. And it also drops to 0 once the speed falls bellow 15 or so.

Have you figured out what the problem was and what needs to be replaced? Is is the speed sensor? Please help out. I am going to Baja in 5 days and don't want to drive in Mexico with a broken speedometer. BTW, the dashboard trick is not working for me.
