I have a 1996 Infiniti I30 Base Model with 220k on it. Recently, the IAC was removed to be cleaned and upon reinstallation, the car will crank but not start. I cannot get it to idle. Since the IAC was plugged with carbon, I thought it was possible upon restart that any left over debris shot into the EGR and finished whatever little room it had to breathe. However, the shop says that the EGR was spotless (I am skeptical). They checked the everything else out and determined it has fuel, air and spark but no go. They have given up on it.
After some research, I think I have some options. I think it could be the typical IAC/ECM burn out. The pick 'n pull around the corner has a lot full of 1996 Maximas. Am I able to pull an ECM from one to replace mine? I ran across a little here and there saying something about how the ECM in a model before 2000 doesn't need to be programmed upon installation, is that true? If so, then am I able to use an 96 AT Maxima to match my 96 AT Infiniti I30 ECM without having to reprogram? Or, do I need my 96 Infiniti ECM part number to match exactly?
Also, if I do find a reasonable IAC/ECM combo, which do I need to install first? I am pretty certain after all of my readings that it is the ECM, but I want to make sure. If I put them in at the same time, then does it matter?
Also, does anyone have any tips on how to install the ECM? Or, any other ideas that fit this illness? From what I can tell this problem with starting is frustrating and somewhat common problem. I don't think the ATS is causing problems, because it is not the NATS, but I will reset it anyway. Also, I will check a few other fuses to be certain.
Anything would be appreciated. Let me know if you need any more details.
Thanks in advance.
