Looking at the Chilton's Maxima book, it says evaporative canister is near rear left tire. Looked. Don't see it. I know I don't need to change it, but I wanted to make sure the hoses are on tight...

TIA,

Phil

the picture in the '96 I30 FSM shows it behind the left rear wheel next to the spare tire well

Does that mean the canister is inside the trunk compartment or outside under the chassis?

I already looked, but I'll try again...

A few more questions if you don't mind, since you seem to have an idea (as this is my first Infiniti after four straight Saabs)...

Hearing a clanking noise occasionally over bumps, etc. coming from right side towards rear. Might this be a loose muffler?

Were there any differences in marking between the regular and the touring model in 1996? (mine doesn't have the I30t, just I30 on the back but the VIN seems to show it is a touring edition.)

With that in mind, do you know if there was any difference in the floormats between the regular and touring edition?

and what should go in the toolkit in the back besides the jack? (i.e. tire iron, screwdriver, etc.)

How familiar are you with the Bose ERR problems with the CD player? I'm pretty good at electronics, but I'd like to know what I'm looking for BEFORE I tear it apart! ;)

I haven't looked under there on mine, but the picture is a rectangualr box.

The clank could be a loose jack, since it is in the right rear, but you might want to check the front upper strut mounts. When they go, the noise transmits through the frame and can sound like what you describe. Open the hood. Position yourself where you can see into the top of the strut tower and bounce the corner of the car. If the big nut in the middle moves, your upper strut mount is blown.

I have both a '96 i30 and a '97 i30t and the floor mats are identical. the "t" is marked i30t on the back of the trunk and came standard with the wing, and the spider wheels. There is no other outward difference. The mechanical differences are a limit slip final drive on the "t" and the suspension is stiffer.

The toolkit has a jack handle and a long stick with a loop on the end to hook into the jack. That's it.

I haven't had any bose problems with either one, so I haven't had to solve the "ERR" problem. You might try a cleaner CD and see if it helps.
