96 I30, engine shuts off when shift into REVERSE

Hi guys,My neighbor has a 1996 I30 and the problem is, when he shifts into reverse then steps on the gas, the engine shuts off. It only shuts off when he steps on the gas.

Also, while his is in "Drive" the engine stumbles at 2000 rpm.

Any ideas?

Seeing as it is a '96 and therefore OBDII, I would some how get it scanned.

AutoZoned, Checkers, or someplace like that will check it for you and pull the codes first.

Sounds like low idle off the top of my head... or TPS. ????edit: I just saw the 2000RPM mentioned and that could be MAF, I forgot to plug in my '90 Q (I know it's a 96 I30) and when I put it in gear it would die like the I30 does.... FWIW <shrug>

i would bet the lockup clutch is malfunctioning.

either the trans or tcu.
